Fifty Cents and a Dream: Young Booker T. Washington by Jabari Asim & illustrated Bryan Collier - This is the inspirational story of a young, former slave's desire to get an education.  Booker T. Washington's desire was so strong, he walked hundreds of miles to get to school, with barely any money.

A Splash of Color: The Life and Art of Horace Pippin by Jen Bryant & Melissa Sweet -  Horace Pippin was a born artist who's career was threatened when he was injured during World War I.  The illustrations in this book are a real treat.
